THC-Infused Beverages: The New Alternative to Alcohol

The rise of cannabis-infused spirits and beverages is giving alcohol a run for its money—especially among one surprising demographic: soccer moms.
Across the country, flavored THC seltzers and infused mocktails are popping up everywhere, from gas stations to liquor stores—even in states where traditional marijuana sales remain illegal. Thanks to the federal Farm Bill, hemp-derived THC (specifically Delta-9) is legal nationally as long as it comes from a plant containing less than 0.3% THC by dry weight. This has created a booming new industry, allowing beverage makers to craft THC drinks that, for many consumers, are an alternative way to unwind.
Mother of two, Brie Giglio of Dallas, Texas, says she made the switch from wine to THC beverages to help manage the chaos of everyday life.
“It takes the edge off,” she says. “It helps me relax—especially as a mom, when you have eight million things running through your head all the time.”
Giglio is part of the fastest-growing demographic in the hemp beverage world: women aged 21 to 45, many of whom are looking for an alcohol alternative that helps them unwind without the next-day hangover.
However, with the category growing so quickly, experts are urging consumers to be cautious. About 18 states have regulations in place for hemp-derived THC beverages—models that mirror alcohol regulation—but the majority of states have little to no rules at all. This lack of oversight means quality control, potency, and labeling practices can vary widely from brand to brand.
Potency is a major concern. Drinks on the market range from as low as 2.5 mg of THC per can to as high as 100 mg. For a new or casual consumer, mistaking a 50 mg or 100 mg beverage for a simple seltzer could lead to unintended effects like extreme anxiety, increased heart rate, paranoia, or a long, overwhelming high.
Reality star Bethenny Frankel recently took to social media to share her own experience after drinking a bit too much of a social THC beverage—highlighting how even seasoned public figures can underestimate the potency of these drinks.
One area of concern is product placement. In some convenience stores and gas stations, THC beverages are being shelved right alongside Red Bull and regular sparkling waters, making it easy for a novice to accidentally grab a high-potency can without realizing what they’re buying.
“Imagine being totally inexperienced and drinking a 50 mg can thinking it's flavored water,” one cannabis industry expert warned. “It’s not just about getting too high—it could cause panic, heart palpitations, or even a trip to the ER if someone doesn’t know what they’ve consumed.”
Many brands are working hard to prevent this confusion. Additional marketing signage, brightly labeled THC warnings, and consumer education are becoming more common in retail aisles. But with regulatory changes on the horizon, especially at the state level, the hemp beverage space is likely to see a wave of new standards in the coming months.
For now, the golden rule applies: start low and go slow. Experts recommend beginning with a drink containing 2.5 to 5 mg of THC, waiting at least an hour before deciding whether to consume more, and always reading the label carefully.
As the hemp beverage industry continues to blossom, mindful consumption and better product awareness will be key to making sure the “buzz” around these drinks stays positive—for soccer moms, seasoned users, and curious newcomers alike.

First-Time THC Seltzer Tips
Thinking about trying a THC beverage? Here’s what the experts suggest:
Start Low: Choose a beverage with 2.5 mg to 5 mg of THC for your first experience.
Sip Slowly: Drink half the can first, and wait at least 60–90 minutes before having more. THC beverages absorb differently than alcohol.
Read the Label: Always check the THC content and serving size. Some cans are intended to be split into multiple servings.
Stay Safe: Treat your first few experiences like you would with alcohol—don’t drive, operate machinery, or schedule stressful activities.
Know the Effects: Possible side effects if you overdo it include anxiety, rapid heart rate, paranoia, or just an uncomfortably intense high.
Pro Tip: Keep a small snack and a CBD product nearby. CBD can help mellow an overly strong THC experience.
