STATES COMPETE FOR CANNABIS TOURISM
In 2021, fifteen (15) US states have legalized recreational cannabis. New Mexico and Virginia are next in line to approve pending legislation and offer their residents access to legal cannabis. As new states join the ranks, some of the OGs are feeling the pressure to stay relevant. Colorado’s huge cannabis tax revenue was not solely representative of the buying power of its own residents. It is estimated that anywhere from 35-50% of colorado cannabis sales are from out of state tourists. Many of these tourists come from Texas and are being drawn to new locations such as California and Arizona. When New Mexico finalizes legalization, there will likely be a large dip in Colorado’s sales and subsequent tax revenue.
